Another home game another 4 goals. Let’s go through some of the key talking points from the game
Man Utd’s new number 9
Lukaku has now scored 11 goals in 10 games. That is just an incredible start to his career in Old Trafford. The best part about his performance against Palace was he didn’t even play that well, but still scored. He was poor on the ball at times and had a good chance to get a brace but ultimately failed. However, at United there have been seen so many forwards that play well but fail to score. Players like Falcao, Welbeck, Chicarito and Van Persie come to mind. United have another forward who can score no matter how he plays.
Rashford played very well against Palace. It took some real confidence and skill to completely get through Joel Ward as he did. But to make such a good ball to Mata just added to a great start to the game. If Lukaku played better I do think he would have got another assist or two. He is just such a workhorse. There were so many moments where Young would be caught out of position, and Rashford had to make the hard yards to recover the ball. The more you watch him the more you realise why Mourinho loves playing him. He has so much pace, a great workrate, and is now starting to improve on his one on ones and most importantly his delivery. If he continues to perform he will start to bag some more goals, and to finally have his breakout season.
Our other Belgian Wizard
Many United fans didn’t see Fellaini’s purpose throughout his time at United until Mourinho arrived. Once we saw how he was being deployed we instantly realised why managers keep on consistently playing the big Belgian so often. Mourinho quickly realised he can’t be relied on in a defensive area, or to make those ambitious through balls outwide. Mourinho uses him as chaos. He causes so many issues for opposition defenders in the opposition’s box. He gives another problem for them to deal with, when Lukaku, Rashford and Mhiki aren’t already enough. He was close to a hatrick today which is just incredible to think. I think many other united fans are finally warming up to Fellaini, as long as he’s used in a correct position and role.
Mike Smalling has returned
If you’re wondering, Mike Smalling is what Van Gaal famously called him in a press conference, and now I use it as a reference to refer to when Smalling was actually good and proved his potential that Fergie predicted. He was great with dealing with any attack that Palace had. Although it wasn’t many. He made some important blocks and was great with his one on ones against Bakary Salon, Townsend and in the air against their forwards. He’s finally showing why we all wanted him o start last season, and just gives us more reliable options for any injury situations.
Palace are truly awful
This was the second time I was able to witness how terrible Palace are. Without Fosu-Mensah, Zaha and Benteke, they seem to have nothing special to offer. And where to begin with Hodgson’s appointment. He was appointed on a 2 year deal. It comes across as a complete panick appointment. This board at the start of the summer wanted to create a good brand of football, which as already a bad idea. They appointed De Boer, but didn’t give him enough in the market and didn’t even give him a chance. It just shows such a lack of patience. They will go down. They have nothing left to offer, unless January can save them.
